Waging Nonviolence is an independent, non-profit media platform dedicated to providing original reporting and expert analysis of social movements around the world. We believe that when ordinary people organize they have incredible power and are the drivers of social change — not politicians, billionaires or corporations.
In short, people power is our beat, and we cover the ways it is shaping our world, grounded in both history and the latest research.
Since our founding in 2009, we have published reporting from contributors in more than 90 countries — with a special focus on overlooked movements in the Global South, as well as issues that traditional media tend to ignore.
In addition to producing our own original content, Waging Nonviolence has created space in our Community section for peace and justice organizations — as well as universities — to publish their own stories. We see this service, which is supported by annual membership dues, as a way to strengthen not only our coverage of movements, but also movement media more broadly. (Go here to learn more.)
We publish all of the content on this site free of charge and without any kind of paywall. Unless otherwise noted, everything we publish falls under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 license, which permits reuse and adaptation with certain provisions. To reuse our content, click on the Creative Commons button at the top of the story you want to republish and follow the instructions provided.
Many larger outlets have republished our movement coverage, including The Guardian, The Nation, In These Times, Salon, Huffington Post, Yes! Magazine and openDemocracy. We have also been cited by The New York Times, The Washington Post, CNN and Vox. Meanwhile, our writers have appeared on the BBC, NPR, Al Jazeera and Democracy Now!
