Grinding the economy to a halt, the coronavirus pandemic has thrown hundreds of thousands of people out of work in New York, and millions more throughout the country. The staggering pace of layoffs and furloughs has led to a surge in demand for the services of food banks, pantries, and other nonprofit organizations, who are rushing to serve those newly in need while also navigating the challenges of distributing food safely amid a deadly pandemic.
While politicians and pundits argue what should be done with homeless and hungry people, the St. Francis Food Pantries and Shelters organization feeds and helps the poor every day, 365 days a year – providing more than a million meals a year to the homeless, the working poor and needy families in the greater New York area.
Putting the numbers in perspective, the St. Francis network serves over 10,000 poor families at over 40 locations including food pantries, shelters, soup kitchens, and senior centers.
Since the pandemic began, we have continued to distribute food to our clients, because their welfare is our highest priority. But due to COVID-19 and the subsequent economic shutdown, St. Francis Pantries has had to cancel many of our major annual fundraising events of the year. Many of our largest corporate contributors have been closed. And the grants we have always depended on have either been reduced or eliminated.
As a result, St. Francis Food Pantries & Shelters’ donations have dropped more than 75%.
At the same time, the number of people who visit our food pantries and shelters has tripled. Many of the people who are coming to us for food are new clientele, and probably never thought that one day they would have to come to a food pantry.
So we are looking at new and alternative ways to raise the funds we need to help the many needy families in the greater New York area who rely on St. Francis Food Pantries and Shelters – such as this GoFundMe campaign!
We will continue to distribute food to our pantries and soup kitchens, as long as our resources hold out.
St. Francis Food Pantries & Shelters is up to the challenge, thanks in no small measure to supporters like yourself.
May God bless and reward you for your continued kindness and generosity.
